The Blackwater

The Blackwater is the biggest of the Boyne tributaries, fed by Lough Ramor in Virginia. It is a typical limestone river, with all the insect life to match, and a good population of brown trout and some salmon. All the usual ways of catching brownies on a fly work well. The most suitable brown trout water is currently controlled by Kells Anglers. Kells Anglers support the policy of catch-and-release. The Blackwater is also an excellent coarse fishing river. All permits for the fishery are available from the Flying Sportsman, halfway up the Carrick in Kells.

One that didn't get away. Fish of 8lbs+ are uncommon but not unknown. This one is on display in the Flying Sportsman, along with others of around the same weight.

Permits for the Kells Anglers stretch ( 8 miles in all).

The Flying Sportsman is everything a fishing shop should be. It sells every conceivable form of coarse and game fishing tackle - rods, line, reels, floats, flies, weights, nets, creels, outdoor clothing and so on. Tom Murray, the owner, is as friendly as he is knowledgeable and always happy to pass on tips for visitors to the area. He also sells permits for the Blackwater and the nearby trout lake, Lough Sheelin.
