Old Kells Waterworks

 Celtic Remains

The old Kells waterworks is sited about 1 mile out on the Virginia Rd at the new Business Park. Starting from a pile of refuse and some rusted pipes, a small group of extremely dedicated enthusiasts have restored to pumping machinery to full working order. It is thus an extremely valuable contribution to the study of Victorian/Edwardian engineeering and proves, not for the first time, that previous generations knew far more than we seem to believe. The working of the pumps are governed by sound ecological principles too, be it noted. Water is taken from the river, used to power the pumps and then returned to the river. In energy terms, it is a win-win situation. Amazing that there seems to official indifference to bringing it back into production. It has potential as an attraction of course but there is so much more that could be done with it.
